In this class, you are going to learn how to be a better feature and freelance writer by conceiving, pitching, and writing a variety of different story types for the Universe and for other markets. Our goal is for you to think, talk, act, and write like a feature or magazine writer. My basic philosophy is simple: you become a better writer by writing. It is all about experience.

Blog #10: Course Evaluation
Well here we are almost at the end. For this last blog I would love to get some feedback on the class. What did you like? What didn't you like? What would you change? What would make the class better or more interesting? I would love to hear any and all recommendations. Thanks for a great semester! Please submit your comments by April 18.

I really have loved this class. I liked the variety of pieces we did. I liked that we got to really spend time on each piece and make them our best. What helped me the most was getting feedback from you and from others in the class. It always helped expand on my ideas and make my ideas better. I loved learning about what made some of the great writers great. It always inspired me to improve.
ReplyDeleteThere wasn't really anything I didn't like. It was a really good, enlightening class. As far as suggestions go, maybe at the end you could really briefly go over what other types of feature stories there are. (Are there types of feature writing other than what we discussed?) It might be helpful to go over, or briefly identify, feature columns in publications in Utah so we can get a feel for what we would be writing for as freelancers. I also liked going over the writer's market book. Doing that maybe a little bit more would be helpful and interesting. Everything was great, though!
This was a solid class. The only slip up or problem we had was the stint in March when you had to be abroad, but of course there was nothing we could do about that.
ReplyDeletePerhaps the best thing I liked in the clas was the amount of resources you gave us whenever we had an assignment. For example, I had absolutely no idea what a query letter was until this class. Having the lecture and then of course the handout with all the description, explanations, good and bad examples, etc. really helped me write my first one.
I really enjoyed this class. I learned a lot and feel better informed about the industry and better equipped to enter it professionally. The personal feedback, real-life examples, and handouts were particularly helpful.
ReplyDeleteProviding a digital copy of the handouts may be more helpful/cost-effective in the future. I want to keep all of them for future reference, but would appreciate a digital version as well as the paper handout.

I loved our feature writing class this semester. I really liked the feedback that we were able to get on an individual level as well as what we received from open class discussions. The assignments were fun and always gave me a chance to grow and enhance my writing skills. I felt that our assignments and class meetings were all very effective.
ReplyDeleteI learned a lot from this course--not just about feature writing, but about how to become a better writer in general. I really appreciated the time and effort you put into helped each of us brainstorm inside and outside of class on our ideas for articles.
ReplyDeleteThe handouts were useful because I could use them as an actual reference when writing my pieces. I also liked that we listened to everyone's ideas and provided feedback as a class.
